4 Apps That Help Me Maintain My Mental Health

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! In April, I took a mental health vacation. What is that? I’m glad you asked! Current events along with my busy life were starting to get to me. I decided to protect my mental health by taking time away from everything. I put my social media posts on autopilot, deleted the apps from my phone, put my phone on Do Not Disturb, and I honestly didn’t talk to anyone much. I needed to prioritize my own self-care just so that I could get through my work days and keep up my mommy energy. In all honesty, I’ll probably be doing that more often. I was able to really focus on what was important to me.

With it being Mental Health Awareness month, I though it only right to share some apps that have changed the game for me. Between working from home full time, going to school full time, juggling virtual learning for my daughter, and still trying to maintain some type of social interaction with family and friends, self-care and mental health jumped near the top of my priority list here lately. In fact, there are four apps that I use daily to assist with keeping my sanity in check. Read on and discover more.

#1.) Balance: There are several times a day I find myself needing to just take a beat and breathe. This app helps me do just that. Whether I just ended a stressful client call, or my child is tap dancing on every single nerve of mine, Balance is great for guided meditation. You can choose the duration of the sessions. There are exercises to release stress, wind down, or even drift off to sleep. On an unrelated note, the voice of the man who guides my sessions is so soothing .. he might just be eye candy in real life. I digress, though. Now, I scored a year of Balance app services for the FREE, but normally, the yearly cost is $29.99, or you can opt for the monthly subscription of $9.99 a month. Check out more here.

#2.) I Am – Positive Affirmations: Negative self-talk is real, y’all! With so much going on, it’s hard not to say, or even feel, little things like “I failed today” or “I’m lost” or more. I Am is an app that will send you daily positive affirmations. You set how many per day and between what hours. The app handles the rest. You can even add your own affirmations to the rotation. When I’m feeling down, I’ll take five minutes to say my favorite affirmations to myself. Being positive can be hard, but after awhile, saying positive things, feeling positive, or even seeing positivity in tough situations, becomes a habit. I Am allows you a 3 day free trial, then $2.99 a month or yearly at $19.99. Find out more here

#3.) Fabulous: Not going to lie, this is one of my favorites! Fabulous helps its users develop positive daily self care habits. You select which goals are important to you, and Fabulous helps you achieve those goals through daily routines and habits. Users can also participate in live challenges and interact with other users. Being in school, the Deep Work challenge helped me focus more on my schoolwork. What started out as developing a habit of drinking more water has expanded into an exercise habit, a consistent morning and evening routine, plus consistent writing. I love how each journey is specific to the user and what is important to them. There are a wide variety of “journeys” available. While I currently use the FREE edition of this app, the premium upgrade is $39.99 per year, which was gifted to me about a year or so ago. Read more here

#4.) Sanity & Self: This is my absolute favorite app! I actually started using this app in 2016 after a series of unfortunate events happened in my life, starting with the death of my youngest brother. My baby brother always pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. I stumbled across Sanity & Self on a fluke and thought, Why not? I’ve been using it ever since. The app offers tons of guided sessions for a variety of topics such as stress, relationships, career, fitness and self-care. I love this app because it truly started me on my journey to loving myself and getting rid of what hurt me or didn’t serve me. Through the support of other users within the community section of the app, I embraced stepping out of my comfort zone and made some major changes to my life. Users are also able to chat with licensed experts one-on-one (for a fee) when needed as well. While there is a free version of the app, I am an upgraded user, $49.99 for a year. The guided sessions are amazing (morning yoga? yes please!), but the community is full of supportive women. We even started a book club! Check out more here.

Bonus App – Moshi Twilight: For all of you with kiddos who fight going to sleep, I highly recommend. Let me tell you, my child used to fight me tooth and nail at bedtime. And after working and then homework, I don’t want to read a bunch of books all the time. So I downloaded Moshi. Works every time. With the free version, there are like 2-3 free stories that can be played. The paid version, $34.99 per year, has an expanded playlist, which you can try for 7 days free. I swear by a bedtime routine for tiny tot that includes listening to a Moshi story! Find out more here.
