How To Own Your Resume Like A Pro

Hey y’all! Happy Friday! Quick post with a few tips to help your resume work for you. Job searching can be time consuming, but don’t underestimate the power of a well-crafted resume. I am not an expert, but these are some things I’ve learned that have worked for myself and others whose resumes I’ve worked on. Simple ways you can give yours a makeover.

  1. Ditch the fancy templates. Some templates are actually causing your resume to be tossed or overlooked because they can’t be read by Applicant Tracking Systems. Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems to screen large quantities of resumes for keywords that match the position(s) they are looking to fill.
  2. Skip listing an objective. You want a job, a new job, or to switch careers/companies. We get it. Ditch the objective as it can be redundant and not provide much useful information. If you’re looking to switch careers, use that space to highlight skills that would be useful in the career you are pursuing.
  3. Keep it short. I normally say two pages max for your resume. List your last three employers, if applicable. Highlight experience that is relevant to the position you’re applying for.
  4. Don’t rely solely on your resume. Yes, you read that right. Many positions are not posted. Instead, companies utilize employee referrals. Network with friends or former colleagues to feel out opportunities that align with your career goals. Don’t be afraid to connect with other within online communities as well.

I could go on, but I’m keeping it cute and short today. Resumes are powerful tools that assist in job searching. Don’t be afraid to brag about the awesome accomplishments you’ve done. Sell yourself. That being said, don’t lie. You don’t want to get into a position that sets you up for failure based on a highly embellished resume. Anywho, go be great! Cheers to the weekend!

Hopefully you found this information useful. Until next time … over and out!
